Have you ever heard the story of Bacon's Rebellion?

Between 1676-1677, Nathaniel Bacon led an armed revolt against William Berkeley, the British Governor in charge of the colony of Virginia. Berkeley was an out of touch aristocrat who was largely apathetic to the needs of settlers living in Virginia's frontiers, and he refused to allow Bacon to trade furs with the natives.

Frequent attacks by the natives led to widespread resentment toward Berkeley's rule, and Bacon led an uprising against him. What's interesting is who Bacon included in his uprising; not just white settlers, but also indentured servants and African slaves. They all fought side by side until Bacon and his comrades managed to drive Berkeley out of Jamestown and then burn down the capital.

This alliance between frontiersmen, poor indentured servants and African slaves terrified the European aristocracy. After the British regained control of the colony, they passed America's first anti-miscegenation law in 1691, forbidding marriage between free blacks and white settlers.

Never forget that the people who rule over you want you to fight against your fellow workers. Because if you're busy blaming your troubles on some other poor bastard you aren't getting any big ideas about facing down your real oppressors.
